Lean organizations produce greater value with higher quality in less time. However, applying Lean techniques to an office environment is not as easy as using the same techniques in production.

This class from Washington Manufacturing Services, Applying Lean Techniques to the Office, focuses on the unique characteristics of an office and teaches Lean principles using office terminology rather than manufacturing terms to engage participants and encourage motivation for change.

Implementing Lean in an office environment presents unique challenges:

  • How do you map office processes effectively to find waste?
  • How does Lean apply to innovation and creative processes?
  • How do you maximize value to the customer?
  • How do you measure the financial impact of Lean in the office?

This class answers those questions. Using a combination of lecture, simulation and in-class activities, students will learn:

  • The importance of value alignment in maximizing value to the customer
  • How to map administrative processes to make waste visible
  • What the wastes are and how they can be minimized or eliminated
  • How to apply Lean continuous improvement techniques to all areas of the office, including innovative processes such as engineering, IT, marketing, sales and new product development
