Cultural Awareness Training Solutions – learning to understand differences
Based on the idea of offering insight to management and production supervisors working with employees from different backgrounds - often ethnic or foreign - the Cultural Awareness Training (CAT) curriculum has proven to be a valuable toolbox to help supervisory staff develop leadership and team-building skills with their immigrant or socio-economically diversified front-line workers. The goal of the CAT sessions in companies is to help diminish adversarial relationships and tensions between groups with limited communication or cultural bridges.
What are the driving forces of this type of training? In most cases, the companies understood that they had clusters of very promising workers who were somehow not being effectively incorporated into their workforce. They also understood that their front-line supervisors were challenged on how to achieve production goals and still deal with the personnel challenges of a diversified staff - including talented but low-skilled Americans - who often comprise a significant percentage of their workforce.
The key components of this training program have been centered on helping individuals understand that we are all enveloped in cultural cloth that can impede our understanding and, therefore, ability to work with others from differing backgrounds, especially in high-production or labor-shortage situations.
The curriculum promotes staff understanding of how their diverse ways of dealing with daily challenges can be synergized by focusing on effective communication and team-building skills in addition to developing tools to overcome adversity and differences in learning/communication styles, while concentrating on company goals and the Continuous Improvement philosophy incorporated in the Lean Enterprise program.
